SIGNIFICANT DISCOVERIES AND INVENTIONS THAT LED TO THE CREATION OF PHOTOGRAPHY

Aristotle the Greek philosopher reported ± 350 BC - for the first time in the history of humanity - about imaging.

Through a tiny pinhole in his book the tool.

In prehistoric times, this phenomenon may already be known to primitive man. Cavemen have seen through a hole in a dark cave images from outside.

The Arab scholar Ibn al-Haitam reported in 1089 an optical device he made. That knowledge came through Merchants from Venice in Europe.

Leonardo da Vinci gave around 1500 a description of the Camera Obscura, a box with a tiny hole as objective. The Camera Obscura = darkroom in Latin.

Fabricius made in 1665 the important discovery that silver chloride darkens under the influence of light.

On May 9, 1816 Joseph Niépce made the first ever use of the word Photographie.

Compiled from the Greek words phos = light and graphein = write or draw literally means writing with light.

Niepce in 1826 was only the first who make a picture with a Camera Obscura, on a pewter plate covered with photosensitive asphalt.

The exposure time was 8 hours in the full sun.

He called his method heliography - the first light print - from the Greek helios meaning that of the Sun.

Louis Daguerre discovered in 1835 after a much shorter exposure time on a silver covered plate, the latent image can be developed with mercury vapour.

He also managed to fixate a picture with a normal saline solution, such as soda or hypo sulphite. We call this method a Daguerreotype.

The positive images could not be reproduced and were also very vulnerable.

To protect the delicate surface of mercury and silver oxidation, the image was kept under glass.

Very many examples of this development method are preserved.

The French state bought in 1839, Daguerre's patent rights and made them available to the whole world.

After this there were many inventions in rapidly made for the Photography and Cinematography, which were very important.

Without this inventions, the current Digital Photography did not exist.

Louis Daguerre ontdekte in 1835 na kortere belichtingstijd op een met zilverjodide bedekte zilveren plaat;
